dfrgntfs.exe - Computer starts defragging automatically
« on: March 20, 2006, 04:42:42 PM »
I have a computer running Windows XP and I use it as a server and mainly it sits idle.
It has a very large harddrive and sometimes while receiving very large files the drive gets very noisey and freaks out for over a half an hour!

A couple of things:

1) Go into the Control panel -> Scheduled tasks and make sure the defrag is not set in there.

2) Edit the registry and change the value of the following key to 0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters EnablePrefetcher

These will keep the defragging from happenning automatically.
