local only connection on vista help?

i get a local only connection on my windows vista it on my labtop, i got a new router, my decktop is vista to and it will work fine, but my labtop will just say local only, i have tryed to disable the tcp/lpv6 that didnt help, i tryed the command prompt and typed in ipconfig/release and it will say the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation?  i took a friends labtop with windows vista  to my house to see if his will work with my router and his worked fine, so router will  picked up his fine, but mine will just say local only? anyone know what i can do to get it to say local and internet so i can get on the internet?  ???

Try the ipconfig/release thing again, but make sure the wireless is enabled on ypur laptop.  Some laptops have a button or switch that will disable the Wireless device and it is not always obvious.
I must travel the path of conquest... power is necessary in order to walk that path.

the wireless is enabled it has a little round botton you puch and it will light up blue, i tried that and still will'nt work when i try that it says: operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for the operation? have any idea what i could try? it just says local only? ???

Also, check these TCP/IP settings.  Go to ...

Wireless Network Connection Status -> Properties -> Internet Protocol Version 4 (and 6) and ensure "Obtain IP address automatically" is checked.  If not, select it and reboot.
