Local Only Internet Problem on New Vista Laptop [RESOLVED]
« on: January 04, 2008, 11:51:32 AM »
I cannot connect to the internet!  I got a brand new Compaq Presario F700 Notebook computer from BestBuy last week.  I brought it home and set up my new Linksys router as well and it all connected fine and good.  Then I took it to work the next day and it was acting funny but eventually got it connected to teh WiFi internet access there.  Now since then it will not connect to the internet at all.  Not even when I hard wire it in to the router with the Cat5 cable!

It just says "Local Only" when I hover over the little internet icon in the lower right of the screen (you know, the one that looks like two little computer screens).  Sometimes it says "Limited Access" instead.

When I connect to a network, mine or my friend's, I get the message, "This computer is connected to Belkin (or Linksys in the case of the friend's) but does not have access to the internet."

Fix For "LOCAL ONLY" Internet Connection Problem in Windows Vista
« Reply #1 on: January 04, 2008, 03:00:39 PM »
There have been a LOT of people having this "Local Only" connection problem lately.  I was one of them.  From reading posts online and going to friends' houses to help for hours on end I have learned the source of this nasty problem.  I know a lot of people need this information dearly, so I have made this guide for fixing the problem.  I have gotten comments from people stating that I have saved them $165+ preventing the Geek Squad from coming out!

I have put a lot of time into this and if it helps you, please consider kicking me a few bucks for my efforts!

So here it is:

FIXING THE LOCAL ONLY INTERNET PROBLEM IN VISTA

STEP1 - First things first, make sure this is actually the problem you are experiencing and not something else.  You know that you have this specific problem if when you hover the mouse pointer over the internet connection icon in your Notification Area (lower right of the monitor) you see the message, "Currently Connected To:  Local Only".  Essentially, this means that your computer is connected to the router, but not through the router all the way to the Internet.

STEP2 - Reset your connection back to normal.  If you have been advised by Forum posts or elsewhere to change all sorts of settings in your connection, that stuff may hider your efforts here.  Set all your network and adapter settings back to normal or default.

STEP 3 - Now the nitty gritty.  Go to the START MENU and click ALL PROGRAMS --> ACCESSORIES and mouse over COMMAND PROMPT.  Do not click on it, rather RIGHT-CLICK on it and select "Run as Administrator".  Now your command prompt window will open.

STEP 4 - In the Command Prompt area, type in:
Code: [Select]
ipconfig /release then hit ENTER
(Notice the space between the "g" and the "/")
Next, in the Command Prompt area, type in:
Code: [Select]
ipconfig /renewand hit ENTER again.  You will notice that it takes a moment to complete.  If you get some kind of error message here, post it here and we can deal with that for you.  If no error message, reboot your computer and try the connection again.  The "Local Only" message should now be replaced by "Local and Internet" and you should be browsing pages like PayPal (ehem... hint).

NOW YOU ARE HAPPY!
Please let me know if this works for you.

Great thread. I have had multiple people asking me about this specific problem and have found no where where I have found the answer... here it is and in great detail.

Kudos.

Just as an FYI... most of the time the computer needs to be rebooted (and the process may need to happen again) before this works.

If it says that then you need to set the correct type of Wireless security to match the router.  For example, if the router is using WPA2 then you need to use that too, Not WEP.

Additionally if you still have a problem with "Limited Access" or "Local Only", try the following reg tweak...

Symptom: A Vista is setup to obtain an IP address from a DHCP. However the Vista cannot receive an IP address from the DHCP. If you assign static Vista, you can access other remote computers and the Internet.

Solution:

First go in to your router config and ensure the DHCP is indeed enabled for wireless.

Now for the fix to disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Run regedit from the Vista.

2. Open the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. In the New Value box, type DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click DhcpConnDisableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Close Registry Editor.

Reboot.
