Local Only Internet Problem on New Vista Laptop
« on: June 25, 2009, 04:04:09 AM »
I connect to the internet via a mobile broadband dongle. I've never had this
problem with XP, but for some reason after connecting to the internet my connection switches from local and internet to local only. The network icon in the tray says:

Currently connected to:
"The name I gave the connection"
Access: Local and Internet

Then it switches to:

Currently connected to:
"The name I gave the connection"
Access: Local Only

Is there anything I did or didn't do that switches it? Why does it switch to
local only? The reason I ask is when it switched to Local Only I am unable
to connect to any websites unless I have them available in "Work Offline"
mode. This also disconnects me from any online programs that I might be on
at the time. Very frustrating!

Any help and advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Did you recently upgrade from XP to Vista?  If so I know the problem.  I think everyone who owns Vista has had this problem, but I believe it has been fixed in Vista SP1 or some upgrades.  I suggest to connect to the internet via wire somewhere and get all the vista updates, then try the wireless again after that.

Other things to try are:

A) Go in to wireless connection properties and disable IPv6 (leave IPv4 enabled)
B) Try the patch from Microsoft here https://support.microsoft.com/contactus2/emailcontact.aspx?scid=sw;en;1410&WS=hotfix

Let me know if you have any luck with these suggestions.

Hi Dynaweb

Sorry. I should of made myself more clear. I am connected to the internet via a usb mobile broadband dongle. In control panel>network connections my connection is in the dial-up section.

vista came with new laptop but I have xp on my desktop. I dont get any problems surfing on my desktop apart from the fact that the signal to the dongle is quite week downstairs, hence thats why I would rather surf using the laptop upstairs as the signal is much stronger. Its just that it keeps switching from 'local and internet' and 'local only' and it is doing my head in. I just cant figure it out

Thanks for your suggestions anyway. If tou can help any further I will be grateful.

P.S. my copy of vista is totally upto date.

I understand the trouble.  Well, have you tried this part?

A) Go in to wireless connection properties and disable IPv6 (leave IPv4 enabled)

I disabled IPv6 on wireless connection but it was still switching between local only and local and internet. I have just disabled IPv6 on the local area connection and so far everything is fine, staying connected to the internet. I'll see how it goes tonight and tomorrow and let you know how it went.

Many, many thanks for your help.

hello sir,

A search on MS forums states: “After you configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows Vista, you may find that, although the network connection works correctly at first, the network connection stops working after one-to-two hours. For example, you may be unable to connect to the Internet, to other computers on the local area network (LAN), or to network resources on the LAN. The cause: This problem occurs because of a bug in the WinSock bind() function”.

I wonder if a Windows Update fixes that bug?
