Outlook freezes while typing new message, saves in drafts

Over the past several months, Outlook freezes in the middle of typing a message to send and then saves the message in the drafts folder, but won't let us open the message and continue typing. I have tried repairing and reinstalling Outlook from the original Office 2002 disk and everything else but nothing has fixed the problem.  Any suggestions?
