Windows Installer 3.1 Won't Install
« on: May 08, 2008, 12:37:40 AM »
Here is a fun problem.  Ever since the beginning of May this year, Windows Update stopped working (Windows XP SP2).  I see now they have SP3 available, so I know that MS has been doing some revisions to WU lately.

I have tried multiple times and even did a repair/re-install of Windows and still Windows Installer 3.1 fails to install.  No reason is given for the failure :(

Try to download and install it manually here

Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable
I must travel the path of conquest... power is necessary in order to walk that path.

Thanks for that.  I downloaded and installed that Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable as you suggested and it installed OK.  Then it restarted the OS without warning (Thanks a lot Bill!).

Then I tried running Windows Update again and after "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." this time instead of saying that I needed to install the Installer 3.1, it goes straight to the recommended updates.

ISSUE RESOLVED! THANKS!!!

It is also possible some of your DLLs became unregistered.  You can re-register them by opening the Command Prompt (START -> RUN -> CMD) and enter the following lines:

Code: [Select]
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Then reboot and try Windows Update again ;)

hello sir,

There are a few applications, mostly made by microsoft, that require Installer 3.1 but they are few so the need for it is limited now but will increase over time.

As for why the installation if failing you should check your Event Viewer to see if there are any installation errors logged.
