[How to] Release/Renew my Network Lease
« on: August 03, 2006, 03:13:08 PM »
This document gives instructions about how to release or renew your network (DHCP) lease on the mobile computing domain (i.e. Public and RezNet ports).

Requirements
Your machine must have TCP/IP installed.
The TCP/IP must be configured for using DHCP to gain access to the UWO Campus Network from a RezNet or Public port otherwise the port will get locked.
If you haven't installed or configured TCP/IP on your machine, the instructions can be found in the document How do I... Configure My Computer For DHCP.

Release/Renew the DHCP lease
Windows 95/98
Select Run... from the Start menu
Enter winipcfg in the dialog box and click OK
Make sure you have selected your Ethernet Network adapter (not PPP Adapter) from the pull-down menu at the top.
Click the Release All button. The IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway boxes will become empty.
Click the Renew All button. You should get an IP Address that starts with 129.100 (if registered). You have full network access to the UWO Campus Network and the Internet from any Public port (and RezNet port if you registered for this).
Click OK to exit the Winipcfg window

Windows NT/Windows 2000/Windows XP (Home and Professional)
Select Programs from the Start menu and then select Command Prompt.
Type ipconfig /release in the Command Prompt window and press Enter. You should get a message telling you that the IP address was successfully released.
Type ipconfig /renew in the Command Prompt window and press Enter. You should get an IP Address that starts with 129.100 (if registered). You have full network access to the UWO Campus Network and the Internet from any Public port (and RezNet port if you registered for this).
Type exit to close the Command Prompt window

Troubleshooting Problems
If you did not get an IP Address that starts with 129.100 but rather an IP Address that starts with 192.168, it means that either:
this computer is not registered to use a Public port. To register your computer in order to get full network access to the UWO Campus Network and the Internet, see http://registerme.uwo.ca/

or there were problems with the Release, Renew or connections to the network.

Check that DHCP is set up and running correctly. See instructions in How do I... Configure My Computer For DHCP.
Shut down the machine and reboot. Release and then Renew again (see above).
If still have problems, note down the DHCP information (IP Address assigned, Adapter Addresss (MAC address), DNS servers, Default Gateway address, etc.). Contact the Help Desk and give them this information.

Note: Some operating systems will hold onto any previous lease information if they can't communicate with the DHCP server. If there is a long delay during lease renewal there is a good chance that has happened and you did not get the correct IP Address.
